Second Annual Opera Contest Winner Named

08.28.09

Wayne resident Laurice Kennel has been named the grand prize winner in the 2009 “Opera Evenings” singing competition, held on Wednesdays throughout the month of August at the Paoli location.  Kennel took home the top prize, a subscription for two to the 2009-2010 season of the Opera Company of Philadelphia’s Opera at the Academy series, and a two-night stay at the spectacular Hilton Niagara Falls Fallsview hotel, during the contest’s finale on Wednesday, August 26.

The second annual “Opera Evenings” contest invited local opera singers to compete in an “American Idol”-style singing competition in which the participants sang arias for the restaurant’s dining guests.  The top three singers from each semifinal evening moved on to compete in the finale. Guests voted for their favorite performers while being treated to a six-course meal that included opera-inspired dishes.

High School and College Art Contest Reception Held

03.10.09

Winners of a high school and college art contest were recognized at a dessert reception held in their honor on Sunday, March 8 at the Paoli location.  The reception was attended by U.S. Congressman Jim Gerlach, who presented the students with their awards, as well as representatives from Willistown Township.  Contest judges and local artists Karl Klingelhoeffer and Ardyth Sobyak were also on hand to congratulate the students on their hard work.  Accomplished area artist Anita McGinn-Natali, a fine-art oil painter, offered the students words of wisdom and inspiration.

More than 70 entries were received from students on the Main Line and throughout Chester County.  Awards were presented in two categories, fine art and digital graphics, at three different grade levels: grades 9-10, grades 11-12 and college. Contest sponsors, who also donated prizes for the winners, included the Wayne Art Center, the Main Line Art Center, Wayne Art Supplies and the Chester County Art Association.

Congratulations to the all the winners: Courtney Reid (fine arts, college), Hugh Phelan (fine arts, ninth and tenth grade), Christie McConnell (fine arts, eleventh and twelfth grade), Amanda Segner (digital graphics, ninth and tenth grade), and Taramin Stuber (digital graphics, eleventh and twelfth grade); and to all who took home second and third place awards and honorable mentions.  Their works were on display at San Nicola Paoli throughout the month of March.
